The use of the Green Beret was introduced by Major Herbert Bruckner in 1953, and while is was not regulation dress, its use spread throughout the Special Forces. The Green Beret was officially recognized by the U.S. Army during 1961 and today is standard dress. The motto of the Green Beret is "To Free the Oppressed," and to uphold this they maintain a mature, highly skilled and superbly trained force of volunteers, which rank among the world's finest unconventional warfare forces.
